Mayan Astronomy the End of Time or a new Beginning in 2012

According to the Mayan long count calendar the world as we know it ends on December 21, 2012. New age groups believe it will bring spiritual awakening while a number of people believe it will bring global chaos in the way of mega earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and so on.

Will December 21, 2012 be the end of time or a new beginning? People all over the world are trying to find the answer to this question. Many Christians believe it has something to do with the End Time prophecies.

Scientists who study these things agree that the planets are lining up and there’s evidence that this alignment could affect our planet’s climate. Many believe it has already begun and that global warming is somehow associated with it because other planets are experiencing global warming as well.

However, the Mayan calendar isn’t the only prophecy associated with 2012. Several religions around the world have similar Dooms Day prophecies associated with this date. Nevertheless, the Mayans were obsessed with time keeping and their methods and predictions have been incredibly accurate.

There are a number of experts who believe the Mayans did indeed believe the world would end in 2012 while others believe the theory to be absurd. Still, there is the planetary alignment, which is supposed to be complete by the same date the Mayan calendar ends.

People want to know what they should do. How should they prepare? What is going to happen? Where is the safest place to be? The truth of the matter is, no one knows what’s going to happen because this event only happens every 36,000 years or so.

There are a lot of alarmists shouting, “Run for the hills!” They are warning people to stockpile supplies and many are even suggesting underground bunkers to hide from the terrible things they believe will happen as we approach 2012.

“And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men… mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

If things happen the way Dooms Day sayers say it will, there will be no “safe place.” The volcanoes alone would block out the atmosphere, killing every living thing on the planet.

However, the changes we’ve already experienced suggest that something is happening. There are a number of alarming events currently taking place which some believe will escalate as we near December 21, 2012; such as social and political upheaval, wide spread diseases for which there is no cure, and increased global warming resulting in devastating natural disasters. These things are already in the news and happening today.

Common sense dictates a watchful eye but making drastic changes, unless those changes would benefit us in the long run, is a bit premature. The wise thing to do is to simply watch and wait. Have a plan in place for all possible scenarios and be prepared to implement those plans if need be.

In any event, with 2012 being just around the corner, the most important thing we should do is get right with God. “…there shall not an hair of your head perish.” (Luke 21:18)

“… there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.” (Luke 21:25)

Therefore, those who haven’t asked Jesus to be their savior and Lord should do it today. When our savior returns, it’s not as important that we know him as it is for him to know us.

“For the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” (Luke 21:26)

In this world there are powerful forces at work. When we ask Jesus to be our Savior and Lord, we become a child of God and receive the seal of the Holy Spirit. It’s free. We can’t earn it. If we could we would have no need for a Savior. Jesus paid our debt to God. All we have to do is accept it.

When the Lord returns, it will be too late and there will be no excuses. Once a person hears the message of salvation, they have no excuse for not accepting it.

End of time or a new beginning? For those who belong to the King it will be a wonderful new beginning but for those who don’t know him, it will be a very bitter end.

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” (Rev.1:7)
