Uncovering the Significance of Dreams

Do you ever wonder about dreams, and if one is recurring, what it is that you are trying to work out by re-running them? I don’t read books again. It takes a special movie for me to view it more than once. There are so many books and movies that I’ve never seen yet and life is too short to squander time on revisits. Why do the same dreams show up, over and over again?

There are “experts” and medical professionals who claim to understand the meaning of dreams, but I doubt that they are doing more than just guessing. Sure, everyone has some degree of insight into human desires, fears, goals, etc. but many dreams don’t drop into conveniently labeled slots and seem to defy categorization.

I always enjoy the dream where I can fly but my joy isn’t unrestrained because I always worry about power lines and tree limbs in this dream. If I’m scripting my own dream, why do I degrade my own enjoyment by including dangers in what I thoroughly enjoy experiencing, if only in my sleep? Waking conscious existence has plenty of dangers and pitfalls, and we are all constantly aware of this fact. Why do I include them in an enjoyable dream that I obviously think I must need to reward myself with? I already know about danger, and want to briefly forget about it and just enjoy myself!

What do you suppose dreams where you are, to some degree, aware that you are dreaming, are all about? It would seem that one could only be asleep or awake but being both at the same time, is illogical. These must be dreams where we are trying to understand or answer things that confound us when we are awake. If I’m correct about this, it makes sense but I’m just guessing. That must mean that I’m a dream expert!

Many people say that they don’t dream, but it is probable that they suppress the memory because their dreams are all unpleasant and frightening. This is an understandable and logical defense mechanism to protect one’s mental stability. How stable these individuals really are is worrisome to me, because I would think that if their life is so unpleasant and scary that none of their dreams are fulfilling, maybe they are sitting up nights cleaning and oiling their guns and thinking crazy thoughts.

Would mass murderers be normal average neighbors if only they could have normal dreams? There are so many questions and no answers! Do you have any ideas or theories about why we dream? Even animals dream as anyone who has seen them running and making soft sounds while sleeping, can observe. This is one mystifying phenomenon!
