Respecting the Earth

Earth.  Arguably the most majestic and fascinating body within our solar system.  But why?  Is it because of the ability to sustain an oxygen rich atmosphere through the evolution of photosynthesising plants?  Or the fact that water can exist as a liquid state and be driven around the globe by the gravity of the moon?  Or is it us?  When you sit down to your microwave diner on a weekday evening to watch the news, how many stories do you see that directly involve the anthropogenic destruction of this planet?  Do you carry on shoving undercooked carrot in you gob, or do you, like me, weep a bit inside?

I spend a lot of my time shaking my head at people that drop litter and telling those I know that they have no respect for the planet.  I don’t know why I bother.  The message isn’t getting through and fewer and fewer people are caring.  I spend countless hours turning the lights off in other peoples houses. It’s not for me to do, but I do it because I care.  So why do I do it?  If you really think about it,in a geological time scale, the Earth doesn’t give a monkeys!  I think of the Earth like a landlord, and we as a race of humans are the tenants in his house.  Imagine if it was a real house and we began pumping smoke around constantly but there is no where for the smoke to go.  The windows and doors are all shut and we keep pumping the smoke in.  What will happen eventually?  We will die.  Then the landlord will come along open all the windows and let the smoke out ready for the next tenants.  So is the question really about respecting the earth, or is it about respecting ourselves as a species?  Because you can guarantee if we become extinct, the Earth will be absolutely fine in a few million years.  All fresh and green ready for the next tenants.  It’s done it before, it can sure as hell do it again.

But we’re a resilient species if anything, and it would take a lot of destruction and selfish consummation for that scenario to play out.  So I’ll continue to look badly on litterbugs and carry on switching peoples lights off.  Because this Earth we live on is a beautifully crafted wonder of nature, and I want to experience all that it has to offer whens its in its prime.  But to do that we need to respect it and everything about it that makes it run in such an awe inspiring way.  If not for the love of the planet, for the love of our species.

Peace Out!
