Are you deathly afraid of spiders? You may have arachnophobia. Phobia means having an anxiety disorder characterized by extreme and irrational fear of simple things or social situations. You’ve heard of taphophobia (being buried alive), acrophobia (fear of heights), and claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces). There are some phobias that are just plain weird though.
Afraid of becoming a ghost? Then you may just have ghostphobia. Can’t stand being around a beautiful woman? Does their beauty terrify you? Then perhaps you have caligynephobia, the fear of beautiful women. Or maybe you are just afraid they are out of your league? So you shaved your hair and you’re friends hair make you shiver in fright. Ah, well you have chaetophobia, the fear of hair.
So your child refuses to take a bath. They freak out when you try to bring them into the bathroom. So you take a wash rag, but they start crying, refusing to let you near them. Maybe they just like being dirty or maybe they have ablutophobia, the fear of washing or bathing. Or maybe you child refuses to go outside and play. They freak out if there is just a tiny amount of dirt on them. They are always taking a bath and washing their hands. Then they may have automysophobia, the fear of being dirty.
You go to the grocery store and the bag boy helps you get your groceries in your vehicle, so you decide to give them a tip. But the boy freaks out and runs away from the money, while you just stand there confused. Don’t worry, he just has chromophobia, the fear of money. Though you may wonder, how in the world is he ever going to survive in the world when money means everything.
