Identifying and Dealing with Negative People

It’s not hard to identify a negative person, but dealing with them can be challenging. We all know that misery loves company and the key to dealing with negative people is to maintain our own positive energy.

Negative people don’t wear meanie hats or dark colors so that others can distinguish them from the positive people. Some negative people may even appear positive with smiles and an upbeat demeanor, but when you listen closely you can hear the tell tale signs of a negative thinker.

People who always insist that they are going to fail, screw up or get sick usually do and make others feel bad in the process. Complaining is habitual and contagious and should be handled like a virus. If you frequently engage in conversations with a chronic complainer, some of that negativity is going to rub off on you.

The best way to handle negative people is to spend the least amount of time possible interacting with them. Don’t engage in gossip, complaints and other forms of negative conversation. By sympathizing you are reinforcing their negative habits. Use positive, non-confrontational language.

If it is a friend or family member, you could suggest that they try to be more positive. There is always an advantage in every situation. Point out that no matter how bad things may seem, there are always choices. Sometimes the choices may be limited or not very appealing, but there are some. We have all seen people who have lost both legs; both arms and all four limbs that have adapted and live inspired lives. Some of them live more exciting lives than you or I!

Keeping your own thoughts positive and free of negative chatter and demeaning self-talk is the best way to keep your energy positive. People are attracted to positive energy and tend to shy away from negative energy.

Using positive thought works just as well as using negative thought. If you repeatedly say you can’t do something then you are making that happen. If you feel good and think well, then all will be well. It’s a simple, uncomplicated concept that requires a great deal of mental energy. Many people are mentally lazy and take the easy way out by complaining, whining and searching for a hero.

By choosing to think about something good, something positive you can change the way you feel instantly. By deciding to see the negative in things, you are in essence creating more negativity.

The next time you run into a negative person, just think positively.
