The Top 10 Hubble Telescope Discoveries

A picture is worth thousand words Hubble telescope played an important role in understanding the universe and the cosmic frontiers.Hubble telescope’s contribution is memorable.Hubble telescope’s top ten discoveries are worth exploring venture for any aspiring astronomer .

Hubble performed a crucial tole in discovering the intriguing form of energy called dark matter. Dark matter acts like a cosmic pedal in accelerating the universe’s expansion rate. Dark energy repels the galaxies from each other at ever increasing speed in contrast with the gravity forces. Hubble’s observation of super novas helped to show that the dark energy’s eternal presence in our universe.

According to NASA, one primary function of Hubble was to help the astronomers in determining the accurate age of universe. Hubble telescope helped the astronomers to observe the Cepheid, variable stars (pulsating stars) in Virgo constellation and other clusters to calculate the expansion rate of the galaxies and the age of the universe .

According to NASA, Hubble provided a cosmic cache of snapshots of the early universe .Some of them are pictures of the ‘deep’ universe in series of one of a kind observations: the Hubble deep Fields, the Great observatories Origins Deep Survey, and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. These Observations contributed the deepest views of the cosmos in visible, ultra violet and near-infra red light. Peering in to 11 billion years old past, astronomers have measured the movement of stars in a distant , far away galaxy. They calculated the speed(the movement of stars) above million miles per hour which is twice the speed of Sun through the milky way galaxy. These fast moving stars helped us to understand the far distant galaxies(a tiny fraction of the size of our milky way galaxy). These galaxies may have grown in to the full fledged galaxies which we see around us today. The Hubble data played a role to aid the astronomers in their studies. By looking at these distant galaxy, They are able to look back in time and see how the galaxies were progressing during the early stages of development.

Astronomers found about hundred planets outside our solar system with the help of ground telescopes. But they wanted the accurate lens of Hubble telescope to calculate the direct measurement of the chemical make-up of the extra-solar planet’s atmosphere. The telescope found the trace of the elements of Carbon, Hydrogen sodium and Oxygen in the Jupiter-size planet’s atmosphere.

According to NASA, many galaxies have giant legendary resident which likes to grab every wandering thing close to it. Hubble observations confirm that these cosmic things are known as black holes. Black holes have mass of million to billion times of our Sun.

Hubble telescope took the snapshot of Gamma ray explosion. According to NASA, these Gamma ray explosions may be the powerful ones since the “Big Bang”(the explosive birth of our universe). Hubble images showed that these bursts originated from the far away galaxies where cosmic stars are being born literally. After the installation of new camera on Hubble telescope, during the servicing mission in May 2009.The images of the most detailed view of the birth of stars in the swirling arms of a close spiral galaxy M-83. M-83 has been known as southern pin-wheel. M-83 is going through faster star formation than our milky way galaxy in its nucleus.

Hubble provided the image of galaxies that hosts quasars. Quasars are equal in size like our solar system. But Quasars lie in the outer flanks of the galaxies. Astronomers are trying to solve the mystery of quasars. Astronomers tracked the Quasar’s origin, proving that the quasars lie in the center of the galaxies with the help of Hubble.

Hubble contributed the image of planetary disks in the Orion Nebula. NASA believe that Nebulae is a flattened disk of gas and dust . Nebula-es are the origin of the planetary systems. Hubble provided images of visual proof that round shaped dust disks around new-born stars are common features.

Hubble images helps to understand that black scars of Jupiter after the collision of the comet shoe-maker with nearly two dozen chunks of the comet in 1994.

Hubble telescope also provided the images of the spectacular glowing burst of gases in colors of a nebulae, meaning the death of a collapsing star. NASA believe that no two planetary nebulae are the same. They are like each individual snow flake on the basis of the Hubble’s keen lens images.

It’s fun to to explore where no man or woman has gone before through the Hubble’s contribution of cosmic snapshots.
