Staying Cool this Summer

Whether you head outdoors for some fun in the sun this summer or you choose to stay cool and comfortable indoors, there are some simple ways to beat the heat in both places.

Remember to wear sunscreen. This may seem to have little to do with staying cool however a sunburn is guaranteed to bring a miserable heat later that won’t soon be forgotten.

Layer clothing. While the temptation to wear as little clothing as legally allowed exists when it’s hot, this actually works against cooling the body while outdoors. Layering light, natural fibers will allow your body to sweat, cooling your entire system. Choose light colored clothing as darker colors absorb more heat than light ones.

Wear a hat that protects your head, including your ears and neck, from the rays of the hot sun. Keep hair pulled up off your neck and away from your face. Sporting a stylish ponytail or even cutting your hair short for the summer cools you down while you look great. That’s a win-win!

Enjoy the natural shade of the great outdoors. Rest under a tree out in the countryside. Relax on a bench beneath the shade of a building in the city. Read under an umbrella on the beach. Shade can be as much as 10 degrees cooler than the actual outside temperature so take advantage of this natural coolant.

Use lotions that contain mint, giving a sensation of cooling to your skin. Keep perfumes in the refrigerator for spritzing on throughout the day for a refreshing pick-me-up.

Staying inside gives you the option of wearing little to no clothing. Enjoying the indoors, sans clothing, quickly cools your body by lowering your core temperature.

If you are not comfortable unless clothed, try wearing as little as possible such as underwear, a bathing suit or shorts. Remember to choose light-colored natural fibers that allow your body to breathe.

Avoid wearing anything on your head such as hats, caps or scarves since this will trap heat and raise your body temperature. Keeping your head uncovered and cool while inside will help keep your entire body cooler.

Keep curtains drawn during the morning and afternoon in order to block out the heat of the day. Avoid using any unnecessary sources of heat indoors, such as the oven, stove and most electronics. Even the smallest amounts of heat from things such as light bulbs can add up when trying to cool down.

Finally, remember these few things that work in helping to keep you cool whether inside or outside. Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is not only important for your health but also for your comfort.

Eat fresh foods such as fruits and raw vegetables. Salads make a great summertime meal with added proteins such as grilled chicken or beef. Outdoor cooking is guaranteed to help you enjoy the outdoors while keeping the inside of your home cooler.

Take advantage of strolling outdoors on your way to a great time indoors at climate controlled environments such as malls, theaters and museums. It’s a sure way to stay cool without paying the air conditioning bill yourself.
