How Weather Affects Populations

Weather effects everyone, from the birds, right up to major government projects. The recent increase in tropical cyclone, or hurrican activity as it is known in the northern hemisphere, has ensured that some people are addicted to hearing the latest weather reports. This is a necessity in Melbourne, Australia, for example, as the weather changes up to three times per day, due to the cities’ unique geographical loation. Most people need to know the weather, to know whether it’s safe to drive, to go out for a run, to plant crops or to reschedule flight plans.

Bad or extreme weather is very interesting, as it is rare, but its also terrifying, as the destruction it leaves often effects out economy and the well being of the ones we care about. Some people stay to protect their belongings, hoping to ride out the storm, but it’s considered best to take whatever one can carry and evacuate. Possessions can be acquired again later on, but a life lost cannot be returned.

Often events like tropical cyclones, tornadoes or super cell storms create environmental refugees, as was seen after Hurrican Katrina hit the Southeastern past of the United States with people wondering around with nowhere to go. That is why right around the world infrastructure is designed to withstand intense weather, so that some form of law and order as well as the economy can be preserved for survivers and to be able to rebuild.

As different theories have it, weather has been responsible for wiping out entire species and ancient civilisations. For example, the flood in Noah’s Ark as told in the bible, or the last ice age, that made the Norther parts of the northern hemisphere inhospitable. Dwindling food supplies become a critical issue when transport is disrupted, as supplies can’t be brought in to relieve the reconstruction efforts. It was noted that whole ancient civilisations in LatinAamerica were wiped out by various storms.

That is why people only live in temperate areas that are away from the freezing poles and away from the scorching equator. It is a place of relatively moderate weather phenomenon. However, there are good outcomes from severe weather experiences. These members of society are less likely to be under prepared for future causes, they become eager to be the first ones to have evacuation plans, food, water, medication supplies. They are also less likely to dwell over possessions and leave instead. As well as the adequate transportaion required to make it out alive from severe weather events, vehicles that are well maintained are ones that are suited for offroading.

Weather also effects future planning of houses, roads and other things. For example, people are less prone to live on the sides of high mountains, as during winter times there is a high risk of avalanches; while others wont risk living around the costs, in latitudes that are prone to severe storms and tropical cyclones. A lot of people prefer to sacrifice serene and beautiful locations for their safety. If nature is craved, then they can always drive to national parks, mountains, or the beaches.

History always repeats itself; however each occasion brings vast experiences for the inhabitants as people begin to understand that mother nature cannot be bargained with, and eventually nature always prevails. Due to global warming, the weather will become a much more essential part in our every day lives, at times our very existence will depend on forecasts. Therefore, people are wanting and willing to become more educated in this regard, so that they will be better prepared for the future.
