How to Restore Destroyed Marshlands

Marshlands can be destroyed a number of ways like hurricanes and oil spills. When they are destroyed by natural disasters like hurricanes or man-made disasters like oil spills, then it ruins much habitat for a variety of wildlife and this can cause them to die. Marshlands are very beautiful and they play a very important role in our environment as well as providing a natural habitat for wildlife and birds. Destroyed marshlands can be restored, but it will take time and money to do it. Right now along the coasts of the southern part of the United States, many beautiful marshlands are being restored to give the wildlife their homes back and to bring back their natural beauty.

Restoring marshlands involve the use of heavy earth-moving equipment. This equipment is used for removing the contaminated soil and to replace it with new and fertile soil. Replanting vegetation is another key to restoring marshlands and it is done by hand planting. Cord grass and Black Needle Rush are the two most important plants that are used to grow new vegetation. This type of grass will provide a very dense growth of grass. Channels for water and nutrients must be provided as well. A man-made marsh is not productive as the ones that God has provided, but with restoration attempts a variety of wildlife can be provided a home. Marshlands are homes to insects, birds, owls, fish and more.

In Louisiana, the marshlands are part of the tourist industry. These marshlands are home to the well known Brown Pelican and the alligator. Without the marshlands, these animals will not be able to survive here. At one time in history, the Brown Pelican almost became extinct when the marshland was destroyed. The Brown Pelican is the official Louisiana state bird. Today, they are not in any danger of becoming extinct because of the continued efforts of restoring the coasts and the marshlands.

Many laborers are needed to restore marshlands. The state and the federal government usually provides funds and grants to have marshland restoration go smoothly. Acres and acres have been restored, but it is not a job that can be done overnight, in fact it may even take years to accomplish the project. Once it is complete, then there are a lot of happy people and animals. Conservation projects are always being planned to protect areas like this. Marshlands play a very important role in the ecosystem as well.
