The Spring Equinox has been an important time of the year for many cultures throughout history. Equinox literally means “equal night”, and the Spring Equinox is the time when the day and the night on the equator are of equal length.
This astrological event has traditionally been celebrated as a great time of rebirth and renewal. It usually falls on March 20th, and the next day marks the first day of Spring.
There have been a few recurring symbols throughout history which represent this event. One of these is the egg. The egg represents rebirth and the potential of the new season. Many people celebrate this time by hard-boiling and painting eggs.
Another common symbol is the rabbit. Rabbits are very quick at reproducing and renewing themselves, so humans have always looked to them for fertility guidance. Giving a bunny to your friend as a gift during this time is an excellent idea.
Finally, flowers have been a common motif throughout history. This is the time of the year when flowers finally begin to bloom after spending the winter dormant. If you live in an area where the flowers have already begun to bloom at this time of the year, then a great way to celebrate is to go into the fields and pick a bunch of flowers. You can bring them back to your home and create many different craft products out of them. If flowers haven’t begun to bloom yet, you can usually order some from a flower delivery company. There are very few things that can light up the face of your loved-one like a carefully designed flower arrangement.
Another great way to celebrate is by wearing the traditional colors of the Spring Equinox. These include pastel colors and green.
You may have noticed that many of these celebration recommendations match the celebration of Easter. This is no accident, since Easter is the dominant form of celebration in our culture. There is little coincidence that the celebration of Christ’s rebirth occurs around this time.
However, it wasn’t necessarily recommended that you hide the eggs or get the bunny to hide the eggs. There are many different myths, rituals, and traditions that have grown up around these basic symbols. They date back thousands of years to the ancient pagan cultures, and most of our modern cultures adopted the practices from them.
There are no hard and fast rules for celebrating the Spring Equinox. You could follow many of the Christian traditions, you could follow another culture’s traditions, or you might even make up some of your own.
