Emotional Suppression causes and Consequences

We all have times where we wish we could really say what was on our minds. However, we don’t always have that luxury, and there are many reasons why. You can’t really tell your boss what you really think of him, and you can’t tell the guy with the gun in his hand that you can’t have his money. There are also other public rules of decency that tell us what we are allowed to do, and what is considered rude behavior. Sometimes we act like jerks anyway, but for the most part, we tend to stay as civil as we can.

For the sake of civility, or the sake of saving our jobs or lives, we sometimes have to bottle up our real emotions. This can have some consequences to it, as we are not beings capable of holding in our emotions. If forced to keep things bottled up, we will do things that will try to get our emotions, and real feelings out without having to say a word to anyone else.

There are many things that people do when they feel as if they are unable to talk, or just don’t want to talk about an issue for fear of reprisal. Some people choose to drink alcohol, and other people turn to drugs. This is a way in which people self-medicate in order to get over the issues that they have in life, and to overcome the stresses of life.

Sometimes people just aren’t in a position to handle the stress that they have been handed. Sure, we all have to work, but some people just don’t know how to handle it. They can’t believe they might have to work for a boss they hate, or will be stuck in a financial hole regardless of how much money they make at work. They then look for a way to escape, and that is why so many people choose such an unhealthy way to deal with the issues.

Human beings are social creatures, and we do rely on people to help us through our problems. That is why we have friends, so that we have people to talk to. This is why we have therapists, and other professionals to help us through our problems in life, so that we can find a healthy way to deal with it. If we can’t process our feelings, we will never overcome the new problems caused by that.

If you feel like you are having problems, the worst thing you can do is hold it all in. Sure, you might want to tough it out for awhile, but there comes a time where you might need to ask for help. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help, and realize that we all need help from time to time. Otherwise, you might just be causing more problems for yourself.
