Water is the reason life exists our special planet Earth. Pollution to our groundwater isn’t intentional, it is a result of technology and the way humanity has been able to flourish. Pollution, in a sense, has become a way of life. This problem can be conquered by public awareness. Ingenuity must be used to create new ways of survival that are beneficial to our environment.
It is January in New England, snow is falling and the roads are icy. Sand has already been put on the roads, now its time for salt. It isn’t environmentally friendly to put salts on the roads, but it isn’t economically friendly for people not to be able to get to work. It also isn’t safe for people to be driving on the roads without the salt. The lack of salt could cause people to lose their lives. Many simple things we do daily affect the water in the ground; simple things such as pesticides, landfills, and septic systems. The very things we need to survive can eventually harm our sources of water.
No one wants to buy an apple with a worm in it. Shoppers pick in the fruit section looking for the shiniest apple with the cleanest red color. A single bruise and the apple is not bought. The “natural look” is not what the average consumer wants to buy at the food mart. Pesticides are necessary for farmers to sell their product, however pesticides are harmful to the water system that picks it up.
Waking up in the morning one makes a cup of coffee, the filter goes into the trash can. The empty tube of toothpaste goes into the trashcan. Mostly everything that comes into the house gets thrown away into the trash can. The trash can gets taken away to the dump, and is not a problem anymore. Trash, however, is a global problem. It is a problem when the waste decomposes, it rains, and the water carries all those toxins into the underground water system.
Everyone must use the bathroom. We can’t simply go on the street and let it decompose there. For fear of the return of the plague, we must manage human byproducts in a sanitary way. The most sanitary way is in plumbing, which takes it to the septic tank. Septic tanks are generally harmless as long as they are pumped. But to pump a septic take takes time and money, and not everyone has both to maintain it properly. This makes toxic waste leak into our groundwater.
Every waste product and harmful toxic chemicals that are produced by people on the earth makes it into the water cycle. The things we need to do every day harm our ground water; an apple from the store, throwing away a wrapper, or using the bathroom. It is not possible to safely change the way we live. A cooperation of our government and the people is necessary to prevent pollution in our ground water. We can sacrifice a little bit now, or our groundwater may be sacrificed in the long run. If our groundwater is sacrificed, sustainable life on this planet may very well be sacrificed too.
