Salicylic Acid Treatment

Overview

Salicylic acid is an active ingredient found to treat numerous skin conditions. Salicylic acid is applied topically and can slough off dead skin cells that could be attributing to the skin condition. Pregnant women, individuals with a serious medical condition and children should not use salicylic acid without approval from a doctor.

Benefits

Skin conditions that respond well to salicylic acid treatment include calluses, warts, acne, corns, psoriasis and dandruff. Once applied to the skin, it can help soften the area and reduce inflammation. The salicylic acid is only effective on these skin disorders if applied topically and should not be ingested.

Types

Salicylic acid is available in numerous forms to treat skin conditions, such as a cream, gel, pad, foam, ointment, plaster, lotion, and soap. Brand names of salicylic acid products include Neutrogena, Oxy, Dermarest, Compound W and Ionil.

Solution

To treat skin breakouts with salicylic acid, apply enough of the topical solution to cover the affected area. Massage gently into the skin and allow the medication to dry naturally. It is best to wash and dry the skin before application of the product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to determine the proper treatment schedule.

Considerations

If you are treating a corn, callus or wart with salicylic acid, the topical solution comes in plaster form and is applied differently than acne treatment products. The plaster is placed directly on the affected skin. The plaster is removed and a new piece is applied every two days for a period of two to 12 weeks. Corns and calluses may only take a couple of weeks to remove while warts can take as long as 12 weeks to successfully remove with salicylic acid treatment.

Warning

The most common side effects of salicylic acid are skin irritation and a burning sensation when applied. Dryness, flushing and redness are other side effects that can occur. Although rare, notify your doctor if more serious side effects occur, like dizziness, confusion, stomach upset, hearing loss or severe headache.
