Home Remedies For Moisturizing Dry Hair

Your hair may become dry, damaged and brittle after using styling products like hairspray and mousse, coloring your hair, or frequently blow drying and straightening. Additionally, if your hair is exposed to wind, sun or chlorine from a swimming pool, it can feel dry and frizzy. To help moisturize your hair and make it smooth and shiny again, create your own hair mask with items from around the house.

Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise contains fats and oils that help replenish moisture in the hair. Steven Docherty, senior art director at New York City’s Vidal Sassoon Salon recommends slathering mayonnaise onto your dry hair, then leaving it in for an hour before rinsing it out. If you have greasy hair, work the mayonnaise only into the ends, leaving the roots exposed. Apply the mayonnaise every week as needed to help hydrate hair and keep it looking shiny.

Avocado Hair Mask

In an article in “Cosmopolitan” magazine, Helen Ambrosen, product creator at Lush cosmetics recommends applying an avocado hair mask to the hair once a week. Mash up an avocado, add a banana, an egg and 2 tbsp. of olive oil. Mix the ingredients until they are smooth, then apply to the hair. Leave the hair mask on for 10 minutes, then rinse off in the shower. The vitamins and protein in the avocado will penetrate the hair, keeping it moisturized throughout the week.

Olive Oil

Instead of spending money on a pricey store-bought hot oil treatment, make your own by heating up olive oil and applying it to your hair. Use with caution, because olive oil can burn when it is hot. Place 3 tbsp. of olive oil in a small saucepan and heat it until it is warm. Touch the olive oil with your finger to be sure it is cool enough to place on your hair and then carefully apply the warm oil. Place a shower cap over your hair and leave the olive oil on for 30 minutes before rinsing it off in the shower.
