Home Remedies for Dry, Damaged, and Frizzy Hair

If you frequently blow dry, color, perm, curl or straighten your hair, your hair may be damaged. Additionally, using styling products that contain alcohol such as hairspray and gel, can dry out hair, making it brittle and rough. If your hair gets tangled easily, breaks off when you brush it, and looks dry and frizzy, use a home remedy to make it smooth and strong.

Avocado Mask

Whip up an avocado mask that is not only healthy for your hair, but available with items from your own kitchen. Mash together one avocado, one banana, 3 tablespoons of olive oil and one egg in a bowl, then mix until the ingredients are smooth and creamy. Apply the avocado mask to your hair, starting with the ends and working your way up to the roots. Place the hair in a shower cap and leave the mixture on for 10 minutes, recommends Helen Ambrosen in “Cosmopolitan” magazine.

Mayonnaise

Use mayonnaise as a moisturizing hair treatment, says Steven Docherty, senior art director at Vidal Sassoon Salon in New York City. Place mayonnaise on the hair straight from the jar and use your fingers to distribute it. Wrap the hair in an old towel or place hair in a shower cap to prevent the mayonnaise from dripping. Leave the mayonnaise on the hair for several minutes, up to an hour. Rinse the hair in the shower, then allow the hair to air dry.

Shampoo Less

Shampooing strips your hair of its natural oils and may cause hair damage and breakage. Instead of shampooing every day, only lather up two or three times a week. If your hair gets to get greasy at the roots after one day without washing your hair, apply a dry powder shampoo to your hair. Carefully sprinkle the powder on your scalp, then brush your hair and style it as usual. When you do shampoo your hair, use a gentle shampoo that is made for dry and damaged hair.
