Home Remedies for Silky Hair

If your hair looks dull and dry, it may be damaged. Hair may become drab and lifeless from frequent blow drying, straightening, coloring, perming and from using hair products, like hairspray and gel, that contain alcohol. To make hair shiny, cut down on the cause of your hair’s damage and use a home remedy to help add moisture and shine to your hair.

Mayonnaise

Applying a coating of mayonnaise to your hair may increase shine and reverse damage, says Steven Docherty, of New York City’s Vidal Sassoon Salon. Apply a liberal coating of mayonnaise to dry hair and leave in for 5 minutes or up to an hour. The oil in mayonnaise will help nourish and moisturize the hair follicles. Then rinse your hair in the shower and shampoo and condition as usual.

Banana Mask

Whip up a banana mask to help nourish your hair and add protein and moisture to each strand. Mash up an egg, a banana and half an avocado in a bowl, suggests Kori Ellis of Sheknows.com. Add 3 tbsp. buttermilk, 2 tbsp. honey and 3 tbsp. olive oil. Apply the mixture to the hair, and leave in for 30 minutes. Place a shower cap over your head to prevent the hair mask from dripping. Rinse your hair, then use a mild shampoo and conditioner.

Yogurt Mask

For shiny, manageable hair, Ellis advises applying a yogurt mask. Whip up an egg white until it foams, then add 1/4 cup plain organic yogurt and 1/4 cup mayonnaise. Mix the ingredients until they are combined, then apply the mixture to wet hair. Wrap plastic wrap around your hair or put on a shower cap. Leave the mask in for 30 minutes, then rinse your hair with cold water and wash it with a mild shampoo.
