Anxiety disorders can be debilitating conditions that affect every aspect of sufferers’ lives for many years. However, there are a multitude of medications and natural remedies for the successful treatment of anxiety without the need for expensive prescriptions. Chinese herbal remedies for the treatment of anxiety are available in many supermarkets and drug stores.
Ginkgo Biloba
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), ginkgo biloba is one of the most common Chinese herbal supplements for the treatment of a variety of health disorders, including anxiety, due to the herb’s natural calming qualities and tendency to increase levels of serotonin, the brain hormone that regulates feelings of well-being. Safe enough to take as a daily herbal supplement, ginkgo biloba is available in a variety of different forms, including pills, powders and liquid extracts.
Dong Quai
Another common herbal supplement used in Asia for the treatment of anxiety is dong quai, otherwise known as the “female ginseng,” according to the UMMC. This herbal supplement increases the amount of serotonin in the brain, thus promoting an increased feeling of calm and well-being. Available in both pill and powder form (and also in the form of a tea beverage additive), dong quai has also been used as an alternative medicine for the treatment of other symptoms often associated with anxiety, including panic, depression, confusion and fatigue.
Goji Berry
Also known as wolfberry, Chinese boxthorn and Gou Qi Zi, goji berry has a multitude of health benefits, including natural calming qualities that have been compared to the effects of sedatives, according to the University of Michigan Health System. Native to Asia and used for centuries as a healing herb, goji berry is typically a safe alternative medication that has very few side effects.
