Spas can be costly with both time and money, and not everyone has extra cash on hand or a few available days for a getaway. If you find yourself longing for some pampering and invigorating spa treatments, you may be able to experience it after all. Just look in your kitchen. Many treatments used at high priced spas are made with ingredients you may already have.
One of the best experiences at a spa is a facial treatment, but you don’t need to spend a lot of money on a weekend getaway to have one. If you have a cucumber, oatmeal, honey and olive oil you can make a spa facial for yourself at home. Cucumbers have high water content and they contain silica, which, according to the World’s Healthiest Foods encyclopedia, improves the skin’s complexion. They also contain caffeic acid and ascorbic acid, which reduce and prevent water retention and inflammation, which is why you often see them sitting over a spa goer’s eyes. To give yourself a spa face mask at home, first wash your face with a mild cleanser and then steam it over a bowl of hot water for 10 minutes to open your pores. Then, put the mask together by putting 8 tsp. of oatmeal in a blender and blending for one minute, or until it is finely ground. Add 1/2 of a peeled cucumber, 1 egg white, 1 tsp. of olive oil and 1/2 tbsp. of honey. Blend all ingredients together until well mixed. Pour the mixture in a bowl. Pull your hair back and apply the mixture to your face and leave on for 15 minutes. Relax while the mask is working by sitting back and putting two slices of cucumber on your eyes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and enjoy the feeling of smooth, refreshed skin.
Don’t throw away that extra cucumber. It can also be beneficial to your hair. Put 1/4 peeled cucumber, 1 egg and 2 tbsp. of olive oil in a blender. Use the blend setting for 3 minutes. Remove from the blender and apply the treatment to clean hair. Put your hair up in a shower cap or plastic wrap, and then wrap your head with a warm, wet towel. Sit back and relax for 15 minutes. Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. This treatment is especially good if your hair is exposed to drying agents, such as chemical treatments or chlorine.
Exfoliation is a process in which dead skin cells are scrubbed off the skin, making way for younger cells and smoother skin to surface. Body scrubs are common treatments at spas, and you can make an effective body scrub right in your kitchen using strawberries. The Grand Spa at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai also uses fresh strawberries in their De-stressing & Rebalancing Body Glow treatment. To make a home spa scrub, wash 10 fresh strawberries, chop them up and put them in a blender. Add 1 tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tsp. of sea salt or table sugar. Using the palms of your hands, rub the scrub over your body, paying special attention to trouble areas. Rinse well when done. This one is particularly effective on rough areas such as elbows, hands and feet.
