Remedies for Severely Damaged Hair

If your hair is rough like straw and gets tangled easily, it might be damaged. Exposing your hair to frequent blow-drying, straightening, perming or hair coloring can cause damage that makes hairs break off at the crown or feels sticky when your hair is wet. To help your hair regain its shiny, bouncy appearance, treat it kindly, and infuse it with moisture.

Stop the Damage

If your daily hair habits are causing damage, stop them immediately. Stop blow-drying your hair on the highest heat setting; instead, use a cool setting, or let your hair air-dry. If you are addicted to your straightener, ban it until your hair is shiny and healthy again. Protect your hair from the elements when you go outside, recommends Steven Docherty, senior art director at Vidal Sassoon Salon in New York City. Wear a scarf or a hat over your head in windy or sunny weather. If you swim in a chlorinated pool, wear a bathing cap to protect your delicate hair from damage.

Shampoo Less

Shampooing your hair strips it of its natural oils and makes it more dry. Harsh shampoos can damage hair even more, so use a mild shampoo designed for damaged hair. If you have oily hair and you must shampoo your hair every day, Arsen Gurgov, a hairstylist at Louis Licari salons in New York City and Beverly Hills, California, recommends conditioning your hair first to retain its moisture. Apply conditioner just to the roots and ends of your hair, then add shampoo to the roots. Lather your hair from top to bottom, then rinse with cold water.

Deep Conditioning

Giving your hair a weekly deep-conditioning treatment will add vital moisture and protein, Helen Ambrosen says in “Cosmopolitan” magazine. She recommends mixing a banana, an avocado, an egg and 2 tablespoons of olive oil until smooth, then applying the mixture to the hair. Cover your treated hair with a shower cap, and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse your hair in the shower, then shampoo and condition it with mild products designed for damaged hair.
