Home Remedies for Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition wherein the sweat glands overwork, leading to excessive sweating in areas such as the groin, armpits, hands and feet. The International Hyperhidrosis Society says that about 3 percent of the world’s population suffers from this disease. Apart from causing discomfort, excessive sweating also leads to foul body odor. Though a number of treatment options are available, home remedies can help alleviate this condition naturally.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the melaleuca tree, which is native to Australia. Owing to its astringent-like properties, tea tree oil effectively dries skin, helping to control sweating. Apply a thin layer of oil on affected parts, such as under the armpits, around the groin, and on the hands and feet, to get rid of excessive sweating. Tea tree oil also has antifungal properties, thus people suffering from fungal infection due to excessive sweating will also be relieved.

Sage

Sage is a kitchen herb and natural antiperspirant used and found in most parts of the world, including the U.S. The International Hyperhidrosis Society recommends sage tea for hyperhidrosis. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 tsp. of fresh sage leaves or 1 tsp. of dried sage. Soak the leaves for 24 to 48 hours at room temperature. The concentrate thus obtained can be applied to the armpits, groin, hands and feet three times a day. However, ensure that the area is dry and clean before applying the sage tea mixture. For sweaty feet, place dried sage powder directly in your shoes. Mixing dried sage with egg dishes, soups and pastas is an equally effective herbal treatment method.

Burdock

A bitter tasting herb, burdock works best in tincture form. Take 1 tsp. of burdock tincture three times a day. Unlike other herbal remedies, burdock controls excessive sweating by diverting excess sweat from the body to the lymph nodes, bowels and kidneys, reducing the amount of sweat coming from sweat glands.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel can be used for controlling facial sweating. Witch hazel oil extracted from the leaves and bark of a witch hazel plant is a natural astringent. Apply a thin layer of this oil on your face or any other sweaty area with a soft cotton ball to alleviate sweating.
