Metabolism is the process by which the body burns energy throughout the day. You burn calories constantly, even when you eat and breathe. If you eat more calories than you burn, the extra calories store up in the body and turn to fat. People with low metabolism are typically overweight. By understanding how to boost your metabolism, you can control your weight loss and drop sizes quickly.
Eating helps boost your metabolism, because your body has to work to break down and digest the food. Instead of eating a large breakfast and dinner, eat five to six times a day. Keep your meals in small portions.
Fasting is not the answer if you are trying to boost your metabolism. Starving yourself actually slows it down. The body will not give the energy it needs, because you are skipping meals. When your body needs energy, it eats away at the muscles.
Exercise boosts your metabolism more quickly than anything. It places your body under extreme conditions, which forces your body to work. Cardio workouts will be the biggest boost of metabolism because they work your circulatory system and respiratory system. The plus side to cardio machines, like treadmills and bikes, is that most of them come with monitors that tell you how many calories you burn while you exercise.
Hit the Weights
Muscle versus fat is no competition. If you were to do nothing all day, 1 lb. of fat will burn 2 calories a day. But 1 lb. of muscle burns 50 calories a day. If you have more muscle, you have higher metabolism. As you lose muscle mass, your metabolism will drop.
Alcohol is a depressant. It slows down your entire body. In 2008, the Journal of American College Health published a study by David A. Yusko, Jennifer F. Buckman, Helene R. White, and Robert J. Pandina proving that athletes used ephedrine and amphetamines to boost metabolism and endurance because it had been slowed down due to drug and alcohol activity. The study consisted of 392 college athletes and non-athletes. Each group was subject to random drug testing due to campus policies while on campus. The ones that were found with substances in their system were found to have a lowered metabolic rate. The ones that were clean rated higher.
