How to Help Hair Grow

Overview

After a bad haircut, you may be anxious for your hair to grow out as quickly as possible. On average, the hair grows about a 1/2 inch each month. To increase this growth rate, you can start a healthy hair care program and make small lifestyle changes. In the meantime, wigs and hair extensions can be used to increase the length of your hair.

Step 1

Give yourself a scalp massage daily. While shampooing, take a couple of minutes and use the tips of your fingers to massage the scalp. This can increase blood flow to the area and stimulate natural hair growth.

Step 2

Eat a well-balanced diet. A diet high in iron, protein, beta carotene, the B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium and vitamin C can help the hair grow. Food sources for these nutrients include fish, poultry, eggs, milk, citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, whole grains, beans, carrots, peppers, nuts and seeds.

Step 3

Treat your hair gently. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair. Never brush your hair while it’s wet since this can cause breakage and slow down how quickly your hair grows back.

Step 4

Trim your hair. Schedule a hair trim for every six to eight weeks. Getting rid of damaged hair and split ends can actually improve how fast the hair grows.

Step 5

Perform a hot-oil hair treatment. The HairBoutique.com website states that this practice can help hair growth by protecting the shaft. Hot-oil treatment kits are available in pharmacies and beauty supply stores. Heat up the oil and leave it on your hair for approximately 10 minutes before rinsing out thoroughly. Repeat this treatment once a week.

Step 6

Limit chemicals and heat-based styling products. Chlorine, perms, hair dyes and relaxers can damage the hair and prevent how quickly it grows. Heat-based styling tools, such as hair-dryers, flat irons, hot rollers and curling irons should be avoided too.
