Hair Care: Tips for Fine Hair

Dull, lifeless, stringy, flat, difficult and boring are all words used to describe fine hair. With the right cut and products, you can put these descriptions in your past and look forward to a hair future that is exciting, vibrant and full of body. All it takes is a few simple changes to transform your hair from fine and flat to shiny, bouncy and stylish.

Products

The right products make all the difference when it comes to fine hair. Start out your day with a good volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Avoid cleansing and conditioning products that use the words moisturizing, smoothing, strengthening and deep conditioning in their description. Use a root booster and a touch of styling putty instead of heavy gels and mousses. Finish off your style with a light spray that will leave your hair flexible and full of body.

Cuts

Get a good cut that shows off all of your hair’s finest points. Short styles are ideal for fine hair, so think about taking off a few inches. Styles that incorporate geometric design through the addition of an inverted weight line, fringe or another point of interest give life to fine hair. Blow-dry-and-go cuts are perfect for fine hair. Keep it simple.

Chemical Services

Avoid perms and relaxers. Fine hair does not respond favorably to most chemical texture treatments. If you must perm, perm for body only. To add life, interest, body and shine to fine hair, get a color service. Color adds volume and texture without creating frizz. If you do not wish to change the color of your hair, get a color gloss treatment. A gloss treatment will give you all of the benefits of all-over color without changing the color of your hair.

Style

Apply root booster directly to the hair closest to the scalp, and blow dry the hair out away from the scalp. Finish drying the hair by directing the ends of the hair in the direction that you wish them to go using a round brush or a vent brush. You can touch up the style with a curling iron or flat iron, but do not create the whole style thermally. Fine hair does not hold curl well, and all of your efforts will be for naught by early afternoon. Finish the style with dry or matte styling putty and a light spray. Fluff with your hands throughout the day to reactivate body.
