What Are the Benefits of Verbal Communication?

Verbal communication is the act of transmitting messages between two or more people through spoken word. Speech is a tool you can use to illustrate your thoughts, beliefs and observations to another human being. Verbal communication, however, is more than a way of merely making your point. As self-help guru Tony Robbins says, “The way we communicate with others and ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives”.

Motivating Yourself an Others

Emotions primarily determine the choices you make. American philosopher William James said “emotions aren’t always immediately subject to reason, but they are always immediately subject to action.” You can use your words to inspire, motivate and encourage others when it matters most. Unlike a written message, speaking aloud transmits the sentiment of your tone. It allows others to understand not only the content of your words, but the meaning behind them. By delivering your thoughts vocally, you can stimulate emotions of those with whom you speak, encouraging them to take action when appropriate.

Sharing Ideas

When two or more people come together and share ideas, each one often gains a deeper understanding of the subject. When you converse with another person, he has the opportunity to present a perspective that differs from your own. This can frequently serve to widen your comprehension of the matter at hand, and even remind you of a solution to some unrelated difficulty.

Clear Up Misunderstandings

You can vocalize the specific meaning of a message that might, otherwise, be misinterpreted. Gestures, posture and facial expressions mean different things to people from different communities around the world. A certain look or movement that would translate one way among people within your social network may be understood quite differently by someone who belongs to another. However, by explaining the significance of your message, verbally, you can avoid any problems created by cultural differences.
