Eggs & Mayonnaise Hair Treatment

Overview

Protein and moisture treatments for your hair can be expensive, but there is an easy and affordable homemade solution that you probably already have in the refrigerator. You can make a rich and nourishing protein treatment for your hair using eggs and mayonnaise. An egg and mayo treatment can give you soft, shiny and strong hair.

Function

The eggs and mayonnaise serve as both a conditioning and a reconstructing treatment. The fats in the mayonnaise condition your hair, while the protein in the eggs helps to reconstruct and strengthen the strands of hair. Together these two items will improve the health and appearance of your hair and may be especially beneficial for longer hair.

Types

Recipes for egg and mayonnaise treatments vary, and may include other ingredients along with the egg and mayo. The simplest option is to simply combine one beaten egg with 2 tblsp. of mayonnaise at room temperature. Double this if needed for longer hair. Combine three egg yolks, 1/2 cup olive oil, and 1 cup of mayonnaise for a richer conditioning treatment. Half this recipe for shorter hair.

Use

Apply the treatment to freshly washed, towel dried and combed hair. Work the mixture into your hair from the ends to the roots, focusing on the ends of your hair. Separate the hair into sections for easier application, especially if your hair is quite long or very thick. Cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap and wrap with a towel. Leave this mixture on your hair for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse well with cold water.

Considerations

Everyone’s hair is different, and some heads of hair may do better with treatments that are protein oriented or options that are primarily conditioners. Fine hair in particular may be weighted down by heavy conditioning and do better with eggs alone rather than egg and mayonnaise. If you need more conditioning, choose a recipe with olive oil.

Effects

Be certain to rinse your hair with cold water. Hot water may cook the egg in your hair, causing significant problems. You may find that the hair treatment leaves an oily residue; however, if you’re able it’s best to allow the residual oil to remain in the hair overnight before washing. If you do have to go out, wash the residue out with shampoo. You can apply your everyday conditioner after rinsing if you would like to remove the salad dressing smell from your hair.
