Tips for Short, Extremely Damaged Hair

Extremely dry hair can be a frustrating condition to deal with, especially if your hair is very short. If you’re trying to grow your hair out, dry and damaged hair is troublesome because it may seem like you are always dealing with split ends. If your hair is damaged because of chemical processing or overuse of heated styling appliances, you can help your hair to grow faster and treat your damaged locks by getting frequent trims, using a weekly moisturizing mask, and avoiding heated styling appliances.

Frequent Trims

If your hair is very short, it may seem counter-productive to get frequent trims, however, if your hair is extremely damaged, you must cut off the damaged hair in order to help your hair grow faster. Damaged hair usually has a lot of split ends, which must first be removed because the hair will continue to split up the hair shaft until it breaks off. Keeping your hair trimmed is the only way to get rid of damaged hair. Marie Claire magazine spoke to New York City-based hairstylist DJ of the DJ Rubin Salon, who recommends getting tiny trims every four weeks, especially if your hair is very short or you are afraid to cut off a lot of hair all at once.

Moisturize

Keeping damaged hair moisturized is a must, especially during the growing-out process. Using a weekly conditioning treatment is vital for those who have extremely dry hair that has a lot of split ends. You can make your own conditioning hair mask by mashing an avocado and half a banana together. Wet your hair, and apply this mixture. If you prefer, you can also buy a commercially prepared intensive hair mask or hair treatment. Leave the treatment on for at least 20 minutes, or as directed on the package. Covering your head with plastic wrap or a shower cap will help your hair to better absorb the nutrients. Washing with a moisturizing shampoo and using a conditioner formulated for very dry hair will help you get the best results.

Avoid Heated Styling Appliances

Heated styling appliances can cause further damage to already damaged hair. Stylist Marc Garrison, owner of New York City’s Marc Garrison salon, cited in an article in Ladies Home Journal, suggests letting damaged hair air-dry after washing whenever possible, avoiding the use of blow dryers and flat irons. Avoiding heated styling appliances will help your hair to heal quicker and to retain more moisture, so eliminating these products from your styling routine will help extremely dry hair to grow out faster and become healthier.
