Skin Detox Methods

The skin is the largest organ of the body. And since the skin is porous, irritants can get through and cause inflammation and irritation. This is one indication a skin detox may be in order. There are several ways to help the skin detoxify. If you have sensitive skin, experiment carefully to see what is suitable for you.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is a common practice in spas throughout the world. Using a natural bristle boar brush (not synthetic), brush your skin before you shower or take a bath. Doing so will slough off the outer layer. Use a large brush for the body and a smaller one with finer bristles for the face, which has more sensitive skin. Move from the outer appendages towards the heart. This activates the lymphatic system to move toxins into the bloodstream, where they can be expelled. This can be done daily.

Sauna

If you have high blood pressure or are pregnant, get medical clearance before using a sauna.
Shower beforehand to begin with clean skin. Use sandals such as flip-flops and clean towels when sitting in a public sauna.

The heat of the sauna will encourage perspiration, and this literally helps people sweat out the toxins. Be certain to stay hydrated before, during and after your time in the sauna. Start with only 10 minutes, and gradually add five minutes each week to about 20 minutes.

Body Wraps

Coating the body with seaweed, clay, mud and essential oils may have a detoxifying effect when applied in a bodywrap. The idea is the clay will dry and draw out the toxins in the skin. Known as a body wrap, you can have one done in combination with a massage or body scrub where the body is scrubbed with a sugar or salt mixture to remove dead skin.

You can do a body wrap at home with a friend’s help. Prepare the mud solution and apply with new, clean paint brushes and wrap yourself in clean, old bed linen. Let dry and scrub off in the shower, then moisturize the skin with sweet almond, jojoba or coconut oil.

Always hydrate with plain water or freshly prepared vegetable soup after treatments like this, as they can be very drying.
