How to Remove Hair Buildup

Overview

Buildup from shampoo, conditioner, styling products and minerals from tap water can collect on the hair, making it appear dull and lifeless. Store-bought clarifying products work well to remove this buildup, but you can also use ingredients that you have at home such as apple cider vinegar, baking soda and beer to do the same thing at a fraction of the price. Apple cider vinegar has a pH level that is very close to hair’s pH level, so it helps to balance the hair, and it also smooths and closes the hair shaft to make the hair appear shiny and healthy.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Step 1

Mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water in a squeeze bottle or small container that you can bring into the shower with you.

Step 2

Wash hair as normal. Then apply the apple cider vinegar rinse to the hair, distributing the mixture evenly throughout the hair.

Step 3

Wash the rest of your body. Leave the apple cider vinegar solution on your hair until you’re finished cleansing yourself.

Step 4

Rinse the apple cider vinegar from your hair.

Baking Soda

Step 1

Mix 1 tbsp. baking soda with 1/4 cup water. Combine the ingredients into a fine paste.

Step 2

Wet your hair in the shower. Apply the baking soda paste throughout your hair. You can use a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly.

Step 3

Let the mixture sit. Leave the baking soda paste on your hair for a few moments, and then rinse and shampoo as usual.

Beer

Step 1

Take an open bottle of dark beer, such as a stout, into the shower with you.

Step 2

Wet your hair. Pour the beer over your hair, making sure to fully saturate the hair.

Step 3

Let the beer sit on the hair for a few minutes. Then rinse the beer out of your hair and shampoo as usual.
