Homemade Facial Mask for Acne

Overview

Acne is a common skin problem affecting millions of individuals around the world. Acne is formed when your sebaceous glands are overstimulated or your skin pores are clogged with bacteria. Causes of acne include diet, puberty, medications and genetics. One method of clearing acne is by using a facial mask. There are innumerable facial mask products available at your local pharmacy or health food store. However, these products can be expensive. Luckily you can make your own facial mask to help treat acne using a few natural ingredients at home.

Step 1

Put 2 cups of fresh strawberries with stems removed in a blender or food processor. Add 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream. The active ingredient in strawberries is called salicylic acid, which is found in most over-the-counter acne products, according to Janice Cox, author of “Natural Beauty at Home.” Puree the mixture for 30 seconds and transfer to a clean bowl and set aside.

Step 2

Wash your face with a mild soap. You need to clean your face of all traces of dirt, makeup and oils before applying the facial mask. Any traces of dirt or makeup can irritate your skin when the facial mask is applied. Pat your face dry with a clean facial tissue or towel.

Step 3

Steam your face for about five minutes before applying the strawberry facial mask. Steaming your facial skin will help open clogged skin pores. Boil water in a kettle and transfer to a clean, dry bowl. Place your face 1 foot above the bowl and cover your entire head with a dry towel.

Step 4

Scoop a generous amount of the facial mask mixture with your fingers and apply on your face, avoiding your lips and eyes. Don’t make facial expressions after applying the strawberry mask. Leave the mask on your skin for about 30 minutes.

Step 5

Rinse the strawberry facial mask off with cold water. Avoid rubbing your face to prevent skin irritation. Pat your face dry. Apply the mask three to four times a week.
