How to Hide or Get Rid of Unwanted Hair

Overview

Unwanted hair on the face and body can be cause for embarrassment in men and women alike, and “Women’s Health” reports that 73 percent of women remove leg hair at least three times per week. When it comes to hair removal, you will need to choose a method that works for your particular type of skin and the hair you wish to remove. One method of hiding or getting rid of unwanted hair may be beneficial for one person, but not satisfy another. Trial and error can help you discover which method is best for you.

Step 1

Shave your hair away. Shaving–using a razor to effectively cut the hair off at the surface of the skin–is inexpensive and virtually painless. The only drawback with shaving is that it will leave stubble behind. Best for larger areas like legs and underarms, shaving can be done quickly with a good quality shaving gel and razor. Choose a new razor for a close shave and clean cuts, and be sure to moisturize after you finish shaving to replenish your skin’s moisture.

Step 2

Bleach your hairs so that they are lighter and less visible on your face and body, suggests the American Academy of Family Physicians at FamilyDoctor.org. Make sure that you use a cream bleach made especially for the body, found in the hair removal section of your drugstore. Never attempt to bleach with household products. Instead, purchase a bleaching cream, apply it to the hair, and wait the prescribed amount of time before rinsing off for lighter, less noticeable hair.

Step 3

Wax away unwanted hair with a soluble wax kit and fabric strips. Warm the wax in the microwave to soften it and make it more pliable. Apply the wax to your skin in the same direction as your hair growth. Press a strip of fabric onto the wax and stroke three times in the direction of the hair growth to adhere. Pull the strip rapidly in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Waxing is good for all areas of the body but can cause ingrown hairs, so make sure to exfoliate before and after the procedure.

Step 4

Wear patterned tights to hide unsightly leg hair between hair removal sessions. Choose a pattern that is busy enough so that the eye focuses on the pattern instead of the hair. Opaque tights, too, are trendy and can accomplish the same feat by hiding the hair altogether.

Step 5

Pluck out the hair with a set of tweezers. You can remove hair at the root by grasping one strand of hair with tweezers and pulling swiftly to remove it. Best for small areas of the face like the eyebrows, upper lip and chin, plucking lasts from three to eight weeks, notes KidsHealth.org. If you find plucking to be too painful, numb the area with an ice cube before you begin.
