The combination of the generically named medications zidovudine and lamivudine are marketed in the United States as Combivir. This combination drug may be prescribed in the treatment of human immunodeficiency viral infections. It functions, according to the Mayo Clinic, by decreasing the reproduction rate of the virus or stopping it. This, in turn, slows the speed of the collapse of your immune system. Combivir is not a cure for HIV and the disease still may be spread to other people while taking the medication.
Flu-Like Symptom
The most common and most serious side effects of taking Combivir are problems that appear as if they were caused by influenza or a cold. These may not appear serious, but they do require immediate notification of your doctor for possible medical help. You may, for example, have a raised body temperature or fever. This may make you feel warm all over your body or it may give you the chills. Either of these may produce sweating. You also may get a sore throat and your skin may turn pale. Fatigue, or abnormal weakness and tiredness, also may occur when taking the medication, as well as a cough.
Headaches
Headaches are the most common side effect of Combivir that are not serious. They may be painful, but in most people, these headaches will persist only a few days to a week after starting the treatment with Combivir. Tell your physician if you keep having headaches for a longer period.
Sleep Problems
Combivir also may cause problems with your sleeping patterns. For example, you may develop insomnia, or the inability to sleep, during the first several days of use of the medicine. You also may have interrupted or troubled sleep with Combivir. These temporary and non-serious side effects are common.
Appetite Loss
Taking the combination lamivudine/zidovudine pills also may give you trouble with the ingestion of food. It may cause you to lose your appetite for several days, or at least make you want to eat less. You also may experience a sensation similar to indigestion. Problems with your digestive system also may lead to stools that are watery, also called diarrhea, which may produce abdominal cramping.
