| We offer a state-by-state overview of funding sources, contact information, and a glimpse into each state librarian’s priorities for the year. |
One challenge for library advocates is to understand the funding structure of their local library. Library funding varies tremendously from state to state and town to town, with uneven distribution between private and public funds; national, state and local funding; and widely divergent governance structures.
With the belief that knowledge is power, Act for Libraries offers a state-by-state overview of funding sources along with national averages for comparison, contact information for state librarians’ offices, and a glimpse into each state librarian’s priorities for the year.
The information on our interactive map was compiled in correspondence with state librarians’ offices in each state. It will be refreshed annually. Much of this information is available publicly through state library websites and COSLA, the organization of Chief Officers of State Library Agencies. Our hope is to simplify the search for relevant information, which can be lost in the abundance of data available.
If you would like to add or correct information for your state, please contact states@actforlibraries.org.
