How to Mix Coconut Oil in Water for Hair Growth

Overview

Coconut oil can moisturize and strengthen your hair. This will help your hair grow long by decreasing the rate of hair breakage, extending the life of each hair shaft and preventing damage that would otherwise require a trim. Mixing coconut oil and water, then applying it to your hair, will seal water into each hair shaft to keep it healthy. Choose cold-pressed, unprocessed extra-virgin coconut oil and perform this treatment once a week to get the most benefit for your hair.

Step 1

Fill a spray bottle with warm water. Spray the water into your hair from approximately your ears to the end of your hair; it isn’t necessary to saturate your scalp. Dampening your hair is essential, since the coconut oil will need to mix with the water.

Step 2

Pour 1/2 cup of oil into a glass and add 1 tsp. water. Pour the mixture into your hand and massage the oil into your hair, starting at the ends and working your way up. Completely saturate the dampened parts of your hair, concentrating on the ends. Avoid applying oil directly onto your roots and scalp, because this can make your hair look greasy.

Step 3

Pile your hair on top of your head. Take the plastic wrap and gently wrap it around your head so your hair is covered. This promotes absorption of the oil and protects your clothing from stains. To provide extra heat, you can wrap your head in a warm towel. This will help the oil sink in more easily. Allow the oil to sink in for at least 30 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the towel and plastic wrap and step into the shower. Rinse excess oil out of your hair with hot water, then shampoo and condition your hair as you normally do.

Step 5

Mix one cup of warm water with two tablespoons of coconut oil in a separate spray bottle. Shake gently to distribute the oil within the bottle, and spray the mixture onto your wet hair for extra conditioning. Dry and style your hair as you normally do.

Tips and Warnings

  • Experiment with adding other oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, to the coconut oil mixture.
  • Using oil in the shower can make shower surfaces slippery, so be careful when rinsing out the coconut oil.
