Some women develop an upper lip shadow–the development of thin, dark hairs that darken the upper lip and look similar to a very thin mustache. Having an upper lip shadow can be very embarrassing for a woman, even drawing mockery from those around her if the shadow is very noticeable. As a result, many women want to eliminate their upper lip shadow and the masculine associations made with the development. While permanent solutions require a trip to your doctor or skin specialist, there are several things you can do at home to temporarily remedy your upper lip shadow.
Shave the Hairs
Shaving hair can eliminate any visible upper lip shadow immediately. You can use an electric razor or a hand razor to achieve this. However, you’ll want to be careful when shaving to avoid razor cuts–this can be a dead giveaway that you are shaving your upper lip and be more noticeable and embarrassing. Be aware that your hair will grow back gradually, so you should keep a constant eye on your upper lip to avoid the appearance of stubble.
Depilatory creams are a safer alternative to shaving your lip. These creams penetrate the hair follicle and dissolve individuals hairs at their root. When you wash the cream off your lip, your hair will go with it. Apply the cream to your lip and let sit for 10 minutes before wiping away and rinsing. You’ll need to do this at least once a week to keep your lip hair from being visible.
Waxing can be uncomfortable to those who have never used this treatment, but it can keep hair off your lips for much longer than other methods. Hot wax is applied to the lip along with a waxing strip. When the wax cools, the strip is pulled off, taking the wax and your hair along with it. Hair takes 5 to 9 weeks to regrow using this method. However, hairs must be at least 1/2 inch long for the wax to take hold of the hair follicles and remove them effectively.
Tweezers can be used to remove hair follicles individually. While slightly painful, this treatment also lasts 5 to 9 weeks, and unlike waxing you don’t need a certain length of hair to grip the hair follicle. However, removing hairs one by one can be very tedious and time-consuming–it is a better treatment for removing individual hairs that remain after other treatment methods have been employed.
